This is an article from Seth Shostak of the SETI institute. He believes that the first intelligent life that we encounter from beyond our own world will not be organic. Instead they will be machines who have evolved from biological bodies. Since the species we encounter will be far more advanced than our own, this will be the next advancement in appearance. Shostak strongly believes that anyone who even thinks that SETI beings will look even remotely close to humans today is simply wrong.

Cocconi, Morrison and Berman
In Cocconi and Morrison's article is about the search for the right radio channel in order to make contact with another civilization more advanced than our own. They have no real idea of what the chances are for finding intelligence that will be able to respond, but if no one searches for them there is no chance to ever find any source of intelligent life.
In Berman's article, "What it was like Before Ozma" he explains how the human civilization use to try to contact aliens. This ideas ranged from Kaul Guass making a giant right triangle, to Charles Cros trying to burn a laser into Mars. As time went by the best way to contact another form of intelligence was to use radio waves. Davis Todd was one that believed he come receive alien radio signals when Mars was closest to the earth and had the government shut off all radio transmitters for one hour. Karl Jansky was another that thought he was receiving alien transmutations when he was really finding the center of the Milky Way. So far no one has made contact yet, but it could happen when the human race least expects it.
